50th Anniversary of the Belgorod State Technological University

From 18-19th September 2007, the Belgorod State Technological University celebrated its 50th Anniversary. The occasion was colourfully celebrated with many events and activities like concert, dancing and sporting activities besides the main scientific conference-lecture events. The scientific-lecture was organised to evaluate the achievements and performance of the university for the past five decades in the educational sphere and its place among higher institutions of the Russian Federation and earmark new plans for the future.

Though the university celebration activities seemed to be localised, they attracted international participation as well. Delegate participants came from Serbia- Radoslav Buban, Rector of the University of Nishe, Marina Gutin, Institute of Gosha, Novicha Mitich, mayor of the city of Nishe; Ukraine- Deputy Dean of the International Affairs of Kharkov Roads and Highways Technological University, Takhotar Victor Grigorievich and a number of African diplomat representatives in Moscow.

Among them were the Ambassadors of Ghana- Edward Apau-Mante, retired Vice-airmarshal of the Ghana Airforces, Kenya- Dr. Sopitter Magita Machaga and spouse Ludmila R. Magita, Kenya embassy counsellor Janet Kogonya Njenga, Mali- Brehima Sire Traore, retired Air Commander of the Malian Airforces and the Angolan Embassy Counsellor for Education and Culture Pascal Ludvino Netto. Earlier, for a week a group of 40 Chinese students visited the Belgorod State Technological University on exchange programmes as part of the celebration activities.

The diplomats had the opportunity to meet their citizens, studying in the city of Belgorod and to get first hand information about their studies, social welfares and problems they have been encountering as foreign students.

The participant diplomats were impressed about the developing programmes of the city, as whole, where they had visited and the cordial atmosphere in which their citizens are studying. Some of them even signed a series of agreement of intention of cooperation with the university. The agreement presupposes a wide range of programmes from recruiting students for the university, undertaking exchange programmes of professors and students, participating in scientific conferences.

The Association of Foreign Students in the Russian Federation actively participated in the organisation of the cultural and sporting activities of the anniversary celebration.

It is believed that such occasions offer opportunities to both the university administration and diplomatic representatives in Moscow whose citizens are studying in the university to meet, get first hand information and discuss common issues concerning the securities, welfares, academic performances and financing of their citizens at the university. These are very important issues which interest both parties because without solution to such problems, it will be very difficult to train highly qualified specialists for these countries. The Rector thanked the diplomats for accepting his invitation for the celebration. On the other hand the diplomats felt honoured to attend the anniversary celebration.
