2nd World Forum of Soviet-Russian Foreign Alumni

From 1-4th October 2007, in Moscow for the second time in the history of the Russian Federation a forum has been organised for former graduates of the Soviet-Russian institutions. The Ministry of Higher Education and Science in conjunction with the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation organised the Second World Forum for foreign alumni of the soviet and Russian institutions in Moscow. The main theme of forum was: «Russian Language in other countries and its potential use in the global educational system» as part of the national event being celebrated this year to commemorate the declared motto: «Russian All over the World» by Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation in an attempt to popularise and encourage the study of Russian language around the world.

Opening the forum, the first deputy prime minister of the Russian Federation responsible for social and national projects, Dmitry Medvedev said that the Russian Federation considers all the foreign alumni as «Russian Diplomats» abroad in the various countries since many of them now occupy very high positions in different fields of the society where they are playing important roles in the development of the national economy. «The Russian Federation is very proud to have helped in the training of highly qualified specialists for various countries», Dmitry Medvedev said.

«Notwithstanding the fact that the Russian Federation educational system is undergoing overhauling, it still remains one of the highest standards in the world today», said the first deputy prime minister of the Russian Federation. In view this. «the Russian Federation will do everything possible to maintain and improve the standard further. Besides, it is the government's policy to encourage the intake of foreign students into various Russian higher institutions because the government sees it as a strategic policy in bringing people together through educational and cultural exchanges», he added. As part of the programme of the forum, other topics such as «Business cooperation between the foreign alumni of the Soviet-Russian institutions and their national unions or associations» and «the current problems of organisation of education of foreign citizens and the internship of Soviet-Russian alumni» were also discussed.

The first deputy prime minister of the Russian Federation pledged the government's support and security for foreign students in the Russian Federation. He revealed that the government had set up a special committee to deal with and possibly stamp out the degrading behaviour of the so-called Russian nationalists who think that Russia belonged to them only. «The Russian Federation government will punish them severely for their anti-human and misconduct against foreign citizens», he proclaimed.

The forum which brought about a thousand Soviet-Russian alumni together was attended by other dignitaries such as the Russian Federation Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the Minister of Higher Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Andrei Fursenko, the President of the Council of State University Rectors, the Rector of Moscow State University, Victor Sadovnichy.
